How We Gather, or HWG, is a creative shoot + community event designed, planned, and hosted by The Gathering Co with design driven by creatives in the community. Every How We Gather shootout is centered around beauty + breaking creative boundaries with design driven by community + creativity.

Growing photographers and videographers that are looking to add curated, inspired shots to their portfolios can count on How We Gather to do just that! Each shootout provides an outlet for unrestricted expression by offering unique captures and connections with diverse clients.

Not only can you expect to leave with a full memory card—or two ;)—you’ll also gather precious tips and tricks from top creatives in the community and friends that’ll cheer you on as you grow!

Highlights of HWG March ‘21

With the pandemic still lingering, safety is a major priority. We were blown away by the amount of safety + care both vendors and participants put into the event! From temperature checks, pre-testing for COVID, and, of course, on-site safety measures it was possible to have a connected + thriving event with safety as number one.

This HWG was the first three day, two night retreat. The extra time really allowed the groups to grow closer together and explore further outlets of community + connection. This particular time together was extra special because we had the pleasure of working with a variety of different personalities and backgrounds. For The Gathering Co. team, the promotion of diversity through the inclusion of models and design that represent different cultures, backgrounds, relationships, and personalities is immensely important to us. We want to show representation within our industry and set a standard for inclusion, and we’re suckers for love in all its forms!

DESIGN DETAILS

Main Design Concept: Adventurous with a Touch of Western Flair, Soft Earth Tones, Terracotta + Seafoam Sage

Final Look: Glam, Western Road-trip Vibes

The design was largely inspired by the adventurous TGC couples that we see everyday. We wanted the dynamic between each couple of models to really shine in the shoot. Unique design elements were selected to provide candid interactions and represent the vibe of the models. Each model and couple’s individual style and personality is always taken into account for How We Gather design; this is what gives every HWG an authenticity that can’t be manufactured. When a model feels represented and comfortable in their own skin, that’s where the magic happens. Not to mention, choosing an outfit that suits the model makes the overall design look more cohesive; it creates a certain je ne sais quoi.

H O W W E G A T H E R L O O K S

DAY ONE

LOOK 1

Day one features the insanely cool Adrienne + Britt. These two naturally radiate the oh so coveted “cool girl” vibe, and together they’re dynamite! Their relationship and the way they look at each other gives us the warm fuzzies.

The two main design elements were a mobile bar and vintage airstream. Both of these stand-out elements embody the adventurous vibe that we wanted to play with this How We Gather. In front of the airstream, we put together and styled a seating area that would accentuate the color scheme and down-to-earth look. This setup takes “glamping” to a whole ‘nother level! All the design elements, from the airstream to Adrienne + Britt’s outfits pull together the design and we couldn’t be more stoked with the result! Peek the fringe on Britt’s outfit, there’s that touch of western flair ;).

DAY TWO

Look 1

Day two starts with Olivia + Brett in front of a beautifully styled floral installment and ends with fun moments around the venue. The romantic energy of this couple was a perfect way to kick off day two of How We Gather! Olivia’s romantic, Italian-inspired dress was the perfect pair to the design, especially next to Brett’s checked jacket. The repetition of lines + textures in the couples’ outfits are a design treat!

lOOK 2

Texture, texture, texture! The styling for this bridal look mixes together several different textures through the florals, the fabric backdrop, the floaty dress, and the itty bitty touch of bling on the eyes. This look was styled indoors so we could add variety to the backdrops for How We Gather. That’s why we recommend How We Gather to photographers and videographers that are looking to build up or boost their portfolios—there are tons of opportunities for unique shots throughout!

Look 3

The final look of the day was with Jessica + Kris. These babes are absolutely adorable, and incredibly photogenic—like, wow. Dapper + chic is what we wanted and dapper + chic is what we got. We can’t get over their outfit styling, it suits them perfectly! Jessica’s gorgeous hair and flowers look stunning against her elegant white dress; then you add Kris’s incredible hat, suit, and shoes against the backdrop of The Parlour at Manns Chapel, and these two look like they’ve walked straight out of a romantic western dream.

Surprise Sunset Session

Surprise! There’s another look! We surprised our participants with a fourth look on day two! Zanetta + Alex joined us for the sunset and blessed us with these glorious shots. This couple gave us all the angles—they definitely know how to work the camera. Zanetta + Alex look like they would be the “it couple” of any party with their effortlessly cool outfits. An acid wash jean jacket and a glitzy cape dress, ten out of ten would recommend it for any elopement or adventurous couple session.
